Leeds multi million pound development opens its door to reveal incredible eco-development

The wait has finally come to an end as the official unveiling of the UK's greenest community takes place on 2nd October, when Greenhouse in Beeston, after 3 years in the making, will open its doors to the public and celebrate becoming a real part of the local community.

To be officially opened by local MP Hilary Benn, Greenhouse, is inviting local community members as well as potential residents to an event which will celebrate the eco-ethos of the building and also the diversity of what really makes a community.

Running from 12 – 6pm, the event is to be the first of an annual celebration of Beeston's regeneration, hosted by Greenhouse. It will include artwork displays from local community members, a gallery of photography detailing the dramatic transition of the building that was previously a 1930's workers lodge, and stalls selling local wares and eco-fashion.

A behind the scenes tour, open to all, will highlight the sustainable materials used throughout the development from the bamboo flooring and worktops in the apartments, to the reclaimed railway sleepers used in the courtyard, to the recycled plastic door numbers.

It will also illustrate how within every room in the beautifully converted property there are concealed hidden eco-features to help save residents 60% on their energy bills. Visitors will see how the sun heats the hot water, the wind powers the lights and lifts and how rain water and waste water is recycled and used to flush toilets, saving up to 3 Olympic swimming pools of water being wasted a year.

Each home has it's own personalised energy tracking system, accessible via the TV so residents can view their energy consumption on an ongoing basis.

Fraser Stride, Marketing Director at Citu, the developers behind Greenhouse, said: “This property proves that gone are the days when going eco meant you had to do without – we're all about making it easier for people to live a sustainable life. It's the blend of technology and nature that makes this development really work.”

The launch event will also uncover the sustainability ethos that's embedded into the development by introducing the concept of shared energy, and showcasing facilities such as the onsite gym and cafe, community car clubs and shared allotments.

As part of Citu's commitment to the local community they are offering ex-residents and Beeston community members 10% discount on a selection of the properties within Greenhouse. A shared equity scheme is also available for all.

Created to be accessible to everyone from first time buyers, to city workers, to families, studio apartments are priced at £59K with 3 bedroom penthouses also available at £230K.

Fraser added: “We have set out to build a sustainable development at Greenhouse, not just in the materials that we've used but with the whole ethos of the development. Communal gardens, the onsite facilities and the energy saving elements all add value to the experience of living at Greenhouse. We've also created a mixed use development because we're keen to ensure Greenhouse provides a community for a number of different audiences.”

Quote from former Manager of Shaftsbury House “It is fitting that Shaftsbury House offered flagship accommodation when it opened in 1939 and that 70 years on Citu's redevelopment into Greenhouse will once again see it as a flagship development”.
