36 The Calls

The competition is now at shortlist stage. Six finalists have submitted designs intended to deliver:

  • An iconic building—complementing the existing buildings and suiting a highly desirable location.
  • Innovative internal and external architecture—ensuring a positive contribution to the existing urban environment while maintaining the city’s relationship with the river.
  • Sustainability—no tokenism: just a truly sustainable building for the future.
  • Prime office space—with interesting and active use for the ground floor space, together with 4 car-parking spaces.
  • Adjacency—the potential to incorporate next-door Calls Landing into the new scheme, and to service both buildings.
  • Outstanding architecture—while maintaining the viability of the project.
  • A symbol of great design for Yorkshire—possibly with reference to the history of the site.

The six finalists have now been invited to present their ideas to the judging panel. They include:

  • Cartwright Pickard Architects
  • Project O
  • Letts Wheeler
  • Fletcher Crane
  • Aedas
  • P+HS

The competition winner, to be announced in early 2010, will work closely with Citu to submit a planning application for the development of this landmark site.
